Fresh, clean water. One village at a time.

Water for a Village

The United Nations Declaration on Human rights considers clean water is essential to be able to realise all other human rights, but too many people in our world still lack access to it.

The reality for many that live in rural Ethiopia is that the water they drink may make them and their families sick.

At Water for a Village, our vision is clean water for everyone.

Making a difference

Catherine Wheatley is a force to be reckoned with. She and her husband, Pete, started Water for a Village (WFAV) in 2014 from their home in Tasmania, Australia. They raised funds to install five water sources in Ethiopia, following a trekking holiday Catherine had taken in the Simien Mountains.

Since then, Water for a Villlage has grown and raised over $500,000 in funds and installed over 100 water sources, supporting over 41,000 people! WFAV is accredited with Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) and is governed by a volunteer board lead by three key values:

To create change with bravery, trust and with whole heart.

What we do

Since 2014, Water For A Village has project-managed the building of 111 improved water sources in Ethiopia that supply clean fresh water to approximately 54,000 people, 6 schools and 2 health clinics.

None of our donors’ contributions have been spent on administrative costs because we are a voluntary organisation. Every dollar has helped to build a water source in a distant village.

Why we do it

Happy-children-look-at-camera-from-above-scaled.jpg.png

In 2024, 3,200 children under 5 died every day from pneumonia and diarrhoea alone.

That is one death every 27 seconds from just two preventable diseases.

This does not include the children who were sick and miserable and missed school.

These are diseases of poverty, but they are easy to prevent

by providing a standard of living that includes clean water.

How we do it

Catherine, our CEO, travels to Ethiopia towards the end of the dry season in early March.

She and our Ethiopian-based Manager, Yalew Tafete, work with local people to supply their village with clean fresh water.

We are incredibly appreciative to our donors (private people and businesses) who provide all of our funding.

We pay respect to the traditional and original owners of this land, the Muwinina (mou-wee-nee-nar) people - to those who have passed before us, and to acknowledge today's Tasmanian Aboriginal people who are the custodians of this land.
