How we ensure sustainability
The improved water sources we build become the property of the people who will use them. It is crucial that these sites are sustainable so we have a number of strategies to ensure this. Read more here.
We ensure that the water source is constructed on public land so that is owned by everyone.
In a few villages we engage a caretake to look after the site and conduct minor maintenance. More recently, the villages select a committee of seven women and men who undertake a 2-day training programme with the municipal council to learn about their water source.
The costs of undertaking the course are paid for by Water For A Village.
The committee learns how their installation works, how to manage it, how to make minor repairs and how to know when to call a contractor to conduct bigger repairs.
Each household regularly contributes a very small amount of money to pay for the contractor when he or she is needed.
The councils stay in touch with all the villages in case there are issues they find difficult to manage. The councils also have Yalew’s number and can contact him if they have concerns.
